PS: I have afterthoughts, which gets pretty long, but please at least read Gungor’s post, which is pretty short. :)————-
“I’m not sure how many times I’ve heard people say things like “Well, yes, God is love, but God is also just…”
It’s almost like they are afraid that if people believed that God really loved them fully, that they would take advantage of that and immediately run out to go on a sex and murder spree or something. It’s almost like they believe that love is only this shallow, timid fondness that is easily conquerable and trampled over…
They say this in an attempt to communicate, “I don’t want you to misunderstand me here and think that God is ONLY loving…because then you will probably not be afraid of him and just go out and do whatever you want to.”
I think that this view demonstrates a shallow and inappropriate understanding of both love and justice.
Love can be ferocious.
“Loving” doesn’t mean weak or passive. Love is strong. Love builds what he needs to build and destroys what he needs to destroy for the sake of his beloved. Love is passion. Love is justice. Love is wrath. Love is kindness. God IS love.
Perfect love casts out fear. This is because love is better than fear. Fear gets you to obey the speed limit if you suspect that there may be police around, but love for the passengers in your car makes you drive carefully. Fear can get you to obey rules, but it cannot transform your heart. Religion that is based in fear says things like “well, yes God is love, but….”
No. God is love. Period.”
———-
man. so in a few weeks, I’ll be going to the 7tour (David Crowder, John Mark Mcmillan, Gungor…& others) It will be like Christmas morning. Um. Or rather…a graduation, the moment of engagement, an onion-fest. Their songs (& God of course) have soaked up my fiercest and ugliest tears so far. DC*B was the first artist I really listened to as a Christian, back in ‘05, and took me through alot since then. I remember the praise team leading ‘You’re Everything’ on Sunday morning, as I stood in the back, so new to everything. I didn’t know Jesus yet. 6 years now, but I still remember the wonder that filled my eyes and my heart, as the words washed over me.
I discovered JMM & Gungor this year, in my lowest of lows. You know worship music is ‘real’ when you can listen to it even when you’re raging/depressed/numb to God. And it makes you realize Him, even in the midst of your own apocalypse. It really goes to show that there is beauty in the broken… (check out Gungor’s song, ‘beautiful things!) and that Jesus is not stoic. This year I have been extremely scared to receive emotion from people, I don’t know if that makes sense. I’m not sure how I got here, but yeah at the first sign of things potentially getting deep in connection I shut off. So when Jesus holds my hand, and tells me He is gracious and compassionate, it ruins me. In Revelations it says that His eyes are like a blazing fire— maybe it’s that same fire that burns away the lies in our life, when we look to Him. Cause He is so pure, and to see Him we have to have that same pureness (Matthew 5:8 wahzuppp). & whats crazy? is that we already have that in Christ. “…but now He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation” Colossians 1:22.
Why do we make it so hard for ourselves, man seriously. It’s receiving the truth of the gospel, of grace, that is the hardest for us.Gungor’s post on love really moves me, because 99.9% of the time we rebel/fall-away from Him because we do not fully understand his love. Or we underestimate it, looking in the vicinity for the solution. The prodigal went back to the father, expecting to be made one of the servants— not expecting his father to throw his arms around him, and give him new garments for his rags. And that’s the world system, isn’t it? If you make a mistake, you need to be punished. ‘Nothing is free.’ We learn that from our parents too, & in the case of bad parenting, law crushes love. Somewhere deep within, it’s set in stone that we must earn our worth. But our worth is secured for us in more ways than we know, the earth knows, all of creation is groaning that we would know it (Romans 8:22).
His perfect love, his perfect love, everything is found in his perfect love.
What you and I were made for.
Period.
